A business analyst is a qualified individual who studies an organization or industry domain and records its overall business, systems, or processes, analyzing the organization’s business model or its interface with technologies. Generally, business analyst helps companies in refining processes, products, services, or applications through data analysis. The analysis of systems and information allows companies to make informed decisions about their internal and external resources and to build and maintain effective organizational structures. Thus, business analyst helps companies develop and improve their productivity by identifying current business problems and designing solutions that solve them.

There are different types of business analysts. These include management consultants, system designers, computer systems analysts, business developers, managers, computer systems, engineering analysts, information systems, networking experts, software systems, and others. To become an effective business analyst, one must be capable of identifying and documenting complex business issues, apply knowledge from diverse fields such as economics, communication, management, finance, and computer science, and understand and use complicated software programs. In addition, good business analysts should be familiar with various application software packages, understand marketing factors influencing product design, and be able to work with people from different disciplines. Analysis of organizational systems helps businesses determine existing processes and evaluate potential processes for improvement. This includes understanding the business requirements, determining the nature and quality of the data used in analyzing organizational processes, evaluating the inter-relationship among processes, analyzing and evaluating the effect of changes on organizational structure, developing a blueprint for future growth based on available data, analyzing the effects of new processes on organizations, and recommending methods for organizational restructuring. Analysis of information systems allows business analysts to evaluate and recommend improvements in information systems used by companies to store, retrieve, manipulate, communicate, and control information.
