Fortezza, located in Rethymnon’s old town, Rethymnon is a reminder of Crete’s turbulent past. In the late sixteenth century, the Venetian ruling classes oversaw construction of the fort with the intent of protecting Crete against Ottoman invasion. Unfortunately, the Ottomans seized the fort within 100 years of its completion and continued to control the island for two centuries.

Agios Nicholasos: This village is famous for its beautiful churches and is home to one of the island’s most prominent musicians. The goat meat is cooked on an open fire.
